Facing Forward—Understanding and Addressing New Orleans’ Community Challenges
New Orleans stands as one of America’s most iconic and culturally rich cities, defined by its deep history, vibrant music and arts scene, and fiercely proud neighborhoods. Yet beneath the beauty and resilience lies a complex web of systemic challenges that have persisted for generations—many of which are now intensifying under the weight of climate change, economic uncertainty, and social inequity.
From flood-prone infrastructure and aging public systems to entrenched racial and economic disparities, the challenges the city faces are interwoven and deeply rooted in its past. The legacy of colonialism, segregation, and industrial decline has shaped a present in which public health outcomes are uneven, affordable housing is scarce, and economic opportunity is out of reach for many. These problems didn’t arise overnight—they’ve evolved through decades of policy decisions, disinvestment, environmental degradation, and civic fragmentation.
Today, New Orleans finds itself at a crossroads. The city must grapple with how to respond to these intersecting crises in ways that are sustainable, equitable, and community-led. While many of these challenges are daunting, they are not insurmountable. Across the city, dozens of organizations—nonprofits, grassroots coalitions, public agencies, and local businesses—are working tirelessly to develop and implement solutions. From housing advocacy groups and public health clinics to environmental justice coalitions and education reformers, these entities are building on-the-ground strategies that aim to create real, lasting change.
To confront these issues effectively, it’s essential to do three things:
- Understand how each challenge developed over time—its root causes, systemic drivers, and turning points.
- Assess the current state of the problem, using real data and lived experience.
- Recognize and support the organizations and policy interventions working toward transformative solutions.
This document explores sixteen of the most pressing challenges facing New Orleans today—ranging from climate resilience and crime reduction to digital access and cultural preservation. For each, we trace the historical context, examine the current landscape, highlight actionable solutions, and spotlight organizations doing critical work on the ground. We also look beyond New Orleans, drawing lessons from cities that have successfully tackled similar problems.
Ultimately, this is a resource for community members, civic leaders, policymakers, and advocates—anyone invested in building a more just, inclusive, and resilient New Orleans. By learning from the past, recognizing the present, and seeking out tested strategies for the future, we can move forward—together.
